Care at Newlands
Resident-Led Care
At Newlands, we provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, in a way that is truly resident led. We believe that every resident should continue to make choices about their own life, just as they would at home. This includes decisions about the food they enjoy, the activities they take part in, how communal spaces are used, and even details such as décor and colour schemes within the home.
Getting to Know Each Individual
We take time to get to know each resident as an individual, their life history, routines, preferences, abilities, and changing needs. By working closely with residents and their families, we develop personalised packages of care that focus on nurturing wellbeing, promoting contentment, and supporting residents to enjoy everyday life in a way that feels meaningful to them.
Families and Loved Ones
Families and loved ones are an important part of life at Newlands, and we make every effort to build strong, supportive relationships with them. Visiting is flexible, with no set visiting times, allowing residents to decide when they would like to see friends and family. Residents are also supported to continue going out with loved ones whenever they wish, just as they would if they were living at home.
Care Planning and Reviews
Each resident has a detailed, person-centred care plan that focuses on what they can do, rather than what they cannot. Residents and their families or chosen representatives are involved in all aspects of care from the moment they move into Newlands and throughout their time with us. Formal care reviews are held every six months, and we actively seek feedback on an ongoing basis to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained.
This resident-led approach naturally shapes the way our home is set out and used.
A Homely Environment
When people visit Newlands, the word most often used to describe the home is homely. Newlands is not a clinical, purpose-built setting, nor is it designed to feel like a five-star hotel. Instead, it offers a warm, welcoming environment that feels like a real home, and that is exactly what many residents and families value most.
Bedrooms and Living Spaces
Newlands Care Home consists of 22 single bedrooms, with six located on the ground floor and the remaining 16 on the first floor.
The home offers a range of comfortable communal spaces, including two lounges on the ground floor, a large dining room, and a separate quiet dining area with a visiting nook. These quieter spaces provide a calm and relaxed environment for residents who prefer a more peaceful dining experience, as well as a comfortable area for family visits away from busier communal areas.
Our wellbeing hub, located in the conservatory, is used for smaller group activities and can also be enjoyed by families when visiting. It is available for private use for special occasions such as birthdays and celebrations.
Residents are very welcome to bring their own chairs for both lounge areas or their bedrooms, helping them feel more settled and at home. If this isn’t possible, we always have a selection of comfortable chairs available.
Bathrooms and Accessibility
Bathroom facilities on the ground floor include a wet room with shower and toilet, a large modern bathroom with a walk-in shower enclosure and an assisted bath, along with two additional toilets for resident use. Upstairs, there is a large bathroom with a walk-in shower and toilet, as well as a further separate toilet.
The home is fully accessible, with a four-person passenger lift and a stair lift available for emergencies.
Everyday Living and Support
We have a fully equipped on-site laundry, and residents’ clothing and personal laundry are taken care of as part of daily life at Newlands. Laundry is handled with care and respect, helping to ensure residents feel comfortable, well presented, and supported in a way that feels familiar and reassuring.
Residents at Newlands have access to a range of healthcare professionals as needed, including GPs, District Nurses, podiatrists, opticians, and dentists. Visits are arranged in a way that minimises disruption to daily life and allows residents to receive care in a familiar and comfortable environment whenever possible.
We also have a dedicated room for professional visits, providing a quiet and private space for nurses, dentists, opticians, and podiatrists.
Our visiting hairdresser attends weekly to meet residents’ hair care needs, and residents are also welcome to arrange visits from their own hairdresser if they prefer.
All areas of Newlands are designed to promote comfort, familiarity, and a genuine sense of home.
